Ocean Decade Conference 2024: A Wave of Hope for the Planet

It seems the heat is already starting to be felt. And it’s not just due to the change of season; something is happening beyond the pre-equinox. The planet is speaking to us. Are we willing to listen?

We live in a critical era where the climate emergency is redefining our world. The impact of global warming is becoming evident with phenomena such as melting glaciers, ocean acidification, and increasingly frequent and devastating extreme weather events. While many skeptics still exist, it seems that society as a whole is beginning to awaken and realize the urgency of the situation.

It is time to take a stand and assume our collective responsibility.

With this growing environmental awareness, an event emerges that could be a key step towards change: the Ocean Decade Conference 2024, organized from April 10 to 12 by the Government of Spain in Barcelona, represents the culmination of three years of efforts by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), under the leadership of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

From scientists and academics to governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society, participants gathered at this meeting to assess the achievements of the first years of the Ocean Decade and establish a shared vision for the future.

The sessions were structured around thematic discussions addressing key challenges:

  • Climate change
  • Food security
  • Sustainable biodiversity management
  • The sustainable ocean economy
  • Pollution
  • Natural hazards.

These sessions combined plenary presentations with parallel discussions, where innovative scientific research results were shared, innovative solutions were showcased, and strategic recommendations were developed to address the identified challenges.

The science we need for the ocean we want.

2024 marks the fourth year of implementation of the Ocean Decade, a period in which thousands of partners worldwide have mobilized to begin delivering the science that can improve the current state of our oceans.

In addition to the main sessions, the conference offered various satellite events, where partners could share experiences, present initiatives, and expand their collaboration network.

From ROSAPARKS, we want to reflect on the need to change this trajectory that is leading us to a point of no return if we do not act. Initiatives like this event give us the opportunity to unite, share knowledge and experiences, and work towards a more sustainable future for our planet as a whole.

It is a call to action that we cannot ignore, a collective commitment to protect and preserve the richness and beauty of our marine world for present and future generations. Let us hope that this initiative is not just a drop in the ocean.
