The fires in Los Angeles have left us with devastating images: skies stained red, displaced families, hundreds of homes and dreams reduced to ashes, and a horizon that seems to fade into the smoke.
Beyond the flames, this disaster reflects a global reality. We are surrounded by “fires” that are not always visible: growing inequality, the advancing climate crisis, and leadership that seems incapable of containing the problems spreading rapidly through our society.
The role of brands
In this context, brands play a role that cannot be ignored. Although they cannot solve these problems on their own, they are essential to mobilising resources, inspiring change, and leading real transformations. Their function is not that of firefighters arriving after the emergency, but of architects of a more sustainable and equitable future.
But how is this achieved? Through leadership grounded in purpose, action, and consistency.
Leadership blowing in the wrong direction
In many cases, those with the power to change things become the wind that fans the flames. Inaction, empty rhetoric, and the pursuit of short-term interests are fuel for global problems. By contrast, purpose-driven leadership, guided by sustainable and social values, can be the extinguisher we need.
Brands that lead with authenticity have the ability to make a difference and become tangible examples of what it means to take responsibility. 73% of CEOs surveyed by Deloitte in its 2023 report on corporate purpose agree that leading with purpose not only improves brand perception, but also long-term profitability. However, fewer than half have integrated these values into their business models.
This is where the contradiction lies: many leaders recognise the importance of purpose, but few act with the urgency society demands.
In addition, regulation is advancing to require greater commitments. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in Europe and the “Green Claim Directive” against greenwashing require brands to be more transparent in their practices. It is not enough to comply with regulations; brands must lead with actions that go beyond what is required, demonstrating a real and tangible commitment.
A PwC report highlights that companies adopting more ambitious climate strategies generate 18% more trust among consumers compared to those that only comply with regulations. This data shows that consumers value genuine effort, even when results are not perfect.
From the ashes to the future
The Los Angeles fires are a brutal reminder that we can no longer afford to wait to act. Every day that passes without taking measures is a day in which the flames advance, destroying not only landscapes, but also opportunities for change.
But they also teach us something else: after the fire, there is always an opportunity to rebuild. Brands have the power to lead this rebuilding, but they need agencies, allies, and leaders to guide them along the right path. It is not an easy task, but it is necessary.
Because if there is one thing we have learned from global crises, it is that there is no solution without collaboration. Brands cannot change the world alone, but without them, change is impossible.
Purpose is not a trend; it is a responsibility
The world needs brave brands that act as beacons in the midst of the storm. And it also needs those who push them to be more than pretty words. In our hands lies the opportunity to make purpose a reality—and to make the smoke from the Los Angeles fires a memory.
