Yesterday was, no more and no less, #InternationalDayAgainstClimateChange \ud83c\udf0e and although time is running out, we are still stuck on the same old tune\u2014the same one, but with different shapes, colours and smells! \ud83e\udd22<\/p>\n\n
#Plastics in clothing, plastics in food, plastics in water, plastics in the soil and\u2026 plastics in the sky? Weeeell, yes!<\/p>\n\n
Here is the list of issues that are wrecking the planet:<\/p>\n\n
A study recently published in the scientific journal Science of the Total Environment has made our hair stand on end: tonnes of #microplastics are already starting to \u201crain\u201d down on cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Vigo, and their negative effects on #health and the environment should be reason enough to sound the alarm and put a stop, once and for all, to this disease that is destroying the #environment.<\/p>\n\n

The particles found in these locations were examined in detail, and the amount ranges from around 5 to 100 microplastics deposited per square metre each day.<\/p>\n\n
It turns out that the #atmosphere, which has been a much less researched topic compared to the #oceans, has proven to be a key reservoir for these pollutants. Constant exposure to these plastic particles not only poses a potential risk to human health, but also allows pollutants and microorganisms to spread across the globe.<\/p>\n\n

To try to understand the scale of this crisis, a group of twelve Spanish research organisations, within the Plastic Waste Research Network in the Environment (EnviroPlaNet), has joined forces to quantify the amount of plastic deposited in different Spanish cities, finding that urban centres with higher population density and regions with intense industrial activity are the most affected.<\/p>\n\n
These microplastics, mostly in the form of tiny fibres, are usually made of #polyester, a material commonly used in textile production. In addition, traces of acrylic fibres and fragments of #polypropylene or #polyurethane, among others, were found. These plastic particles could amount to a daily rain of one million plastic particles in places such as Puerta del Sol in Madrid\u2026<\/p>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n

\ud83c\udfb5 \u2026And the grapes and the tar<\/strong> \ud83d\udda4<\/h2>\n\n
And where does so much microplastic come from? This macro-pollution stems from various sources, from tyre wear on roads to the release of synthetic fibres when we wash our clothes.<\/p>\n\n
This situation calls for immediate action, especially in the textile industry, where non-biodegradable materials and unsustainable production processes are at the root of this problem.<\/p>\n\n

Awareness and sustainable action must guide our decisions to ensure a cleaner, healthier and more natural future for everyone.<\/p>\n\n
